A review of resources and strategies to locate and follow the earliest roads identified throughout the Southern states.

Speaker:

J. Mark Lowe describes himself as a lifelong genealogist. He is a professional genealogist, author, and lecturer who specializes in original records and manuscripts throughout the South. Mark enjoys opportunities to share what he has learned over the years through YouTube, Webinars, and Institutes.  

He serves as the Course Coordinator for ‘Research in the South’ at IGHR (Georgia) and TIGR (Texas), does Webinars for Legacy Family Tree Webinars and has worked on several genealogical television series including Finding Your Past, African American Lives 2, Who Do You Think You Are? and UnXplained Events, and provided content for podcasts on Gimlet Media, including Twice Removed.  

Bring your questions and your knowledge about researching in Washington, D.C., and we’ll talk.  We’ll also discuss planning research trips in general.  Get ready to go on the road and find some new discoveries!  This will be an informal session to share our research, tips, sources, and whatever comes to mind.  Moderator: Dina Carson

When Google and traditional search engines don’t return useful information, don’t stop there. We will explore resources that are invisible to Google and hidden deep within web sites and proprietary databases. The “hidden web” lies buried within the collections for commercial web sites, libraries, archives, and museums. We will also talk about the importance of indexes that deep-link into web sites online, thus uncovering hidden gems of information that may not be found easily through a search engine query.

Cyndi, a genealogist for more than 41 years, has an expertise in using technology for genealogy. Additionally, her many active years in genealogy have also resulted in a specialty for research in the United States and bringing together traditional methodology with organization, computers, software, and the Internet. Cyndi is the recipient of the 2018 Society of Genealogists Prince Michael of Kent Award, the 2016 National Genealogical Society President’s Citation, and many other awards and honors. She has served in several capacities for genealogical organizations.
