Do you wonder about the accuracy of your family stories? Do you wish you had exciting stories about your ancestors to cherish and tell? Learn about strategies and sources for verifying family stories and turning genealogical dates and places into rich stories and experiences.

Speaker:

Keith Erekson is an award-winning author, teacher, and public historian who has published on topics including politics, hoaxes, Abraham Lincoln, Elvis Presley, and Church history. He grew up in Baltimore, served a mission in Brazil, and earned advanced degrees in history and business.

Genealogy in the Park! @ Foothills Community Park

Our July member meeting will be an in-person social event at Foothills Community Park!  BGS will provide drinks.  Bring cookies or a snack to share, if you’d like.  It will be wonderful to get together, see faces, and catch up with everyone.  No speaker is planned, just conversation.

“Finding Records to Help Document Your Farming Ancestor” – By Lisa Gorrell, CG

Up to about 1870, farming was the number one occupation. You probably have a large number of farmers in your family. There many record sets that document our farming ancestors such as land, tax, and probate records. Newspapers and many agricultural records can add context to their story.

Speaker:

Lisa S. Gorrell is a Certified Genealogist®, who is graduate of the ProGen program and an alumnus of many genealogical institutes. She has served on boards of several genealogical societies and is currently the recording secretary with the Contra Costa County Historical Society, where she volunteers at their archives. She is a founding member and instructor of the new online institute Applied Genealogy Institute.

She enjoys giving genealogy presentations and writing about her family on two blogs: “Mam-ma’s Southern Family” http://mam-massouthernfamily.blogspot.com/ and “My Trails into the Past” http://mytrailsintothepast.blogspot.com/. She has written a three-generation family history about her husband’s Swedish ancestors.
